- What is the Summer School 2026?
The Summer School 2026 is an international educational program hosted by the European Platform of Transport Sciences (EPTS). It is organised by the Austrian Association in Support of the Blind and Visually Impaired, in collaboration with the Institute for Transport and Logistics Management at WU Vienna, and supported by the University of Žilina.
The event brings together students and professionals to explore inclusive and accessible mobility and transportation systems through both academic learning and hands-on experience.
- Who can apply?
Applications are open to students from all academic levels and disciplines who have an interest in accessibility, transport, urban planning, or social inclusion. The program welcomes diversity — participants with and without disabilities are strongly encouraged to apply.
- How many participants are selected?
From nearly 100 applications in the last edition, 30 students from 16 different countries were selected. A similar number will be chosen for the 2026 program to ensure a collaborative and interactive learning environment.
- What will I learn?
Participants will gain:
- A deep understanding of accessible mobility and disability studies.
- Insights into legal frameworks and planning processes for inclusive transport.
- First-hand experience of barriers faced by people with disabilities.
- Practical skills to design and promote accessibility in professional contexts.
The guiding principle is inspired by the European Disability Forum (EDF) motto:
“Nothing about us without us.”
- What kind of activities are included?
The program combines lectures, workshops, and experiential learning.
Highlights include:
- Expert talks by accessibility professionals and people with disabilities.
- A hands-on self-experience module using simulation tools (blindfolds, canes, wheelchairs, etc.).
- A cross-border public transport challenge, where students plan and execute a journey (previously from Vienna to Bratislava).
- Poster sessions and group presentations to reflect on learning outcomes.
- Where does the Summer School take place?
The main sessions will be held in Vienna, Austria, with selected field activities and excursions, potentially including a cross-border trip to neighbouring regions (as in previous editions).
- What impact does the Summer School aim to create?
The program empowers students to become ambassadors of accessibility.
By integrating inclusive thinking into their future careers, participants help make Europe more barrier-free — step by step. As one of the previous program directors, Prof. Fürst, summarised:
“Students take these experiences back to their home countries and into their future professions as ambassadors of accessibility.”
- Will there be collaboration opportunities?
Yes. The Summer School encourages interdisciplinary teamwork and networking with peers, experts, and organisations working in transport, accessibility, and urban development.
- How can I apply?
Application details for the 2026 edition will be announced soon on the official EPTS website and partner platforms. Stay tuned for updates on eligibility, application deadlines, and program dates.
- What makes this Summer School unique?
Unlike traditional academic programs, this Summer School:
- Combines academic knowledge with real-world accessibility challenges.
- Involves people with disabilities as co-lecturers and mentors.
- Encourages learning by experience, not just theory.
- Promotes an international exchange of ideas and cultures, all focused on inclusive mobility.
